Superfoods!

If you haven’t heard of ‘super’ foods before, you may be picturing a green bean wearing a cape flying high over a skyscraper or a grape with X-ray vision saving other fruit and veggies from the bad guys. But, there is indeed more to the term super.
Superfoods have this label because they are packed with good things that offer excellent overall health benefits. These food benefits include fighting cancer, lowering blood pressure, decreasing cholesterol, preventing bone loss, decreasing inflammation, and improving digestion. They are packed with excellent amounts of fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and protein.
From fruits and vegetables to grains and beyond, here are a few foods that stand out as ‘super’:
- Quinoa, Flax Seed, Chia Seeds, Wheat Germ, Oatmeal
- Beans/Lentils, Salmon, Pistachios, Almonds, Eggs, Yogurt
- Watermelon, Strawberries, Apples, Blueberries, Kale, Cauliflower, Broccoli
- Ginger, Garlic, Green tea
Please don’t limit yourself to just this list. There are many other foods that can do wonderful things for you, as well. To find out more just talk with your NxStage Kidney Care Dietitian, and be sure to visit the NxStage Navigator for recipes that include some of your favorite super foods!
*Some of these superfoods are higher in phosphorus and/or potassium, so watch your portion sizes. A little goes a long way. And as always, review any diet changes with your doctor or dietitian to be sure it is right for you.*
